Sunset at Seventeen

Category UnCategories

I remember the sand between my toes...
the warmth from the sun...
17 and life, had just begun...

I was walking the beach at Pismo...
as the sunset was reaching the sea..
a girl passed by me...
at not more than ten feet...
"Hey girl" "I said"
she turned and smiled at me...

"She said" "what boy" and the rest was history.
The sunset we talked through was a gift from God..
we built a fire...
laughed about our parents catching us...
and how grounded we'd be...

I remember her sleek shape in the fire light..
striking black hair....God, those blue eyes...
I could never get a girl like that back home...
and yet, here she was looking at me...
a stunning 16 year old beauty...

"She told me"
her parents were getting a divorce...
and they were always fighting...
how she was torn between the two...
and didn't know what to do...

"I told her" "yeah"..."mine too"
She started to cry...
I leaned over and took her into my arms...
and as she cried...
"I told" "her," "it's not so bad"
"my next door neighbor"
"lost his dad in the war."

She smiled and kissed me...
I have never felt that way before...
She stroked my long hair ...
and put her hands on me like an angel...

She was my first kiss...
She was my first lover..
the one you never forget...

It came so easy...
not cheap or sleazy...
She spent all night with me...
on that beach in Pismo...

We woke up, to the cold winds...
and I knew, when we said goodbye...
we would never see each other again...

I will never forget that black haired beauty...
with blue eyes...
16 and full of wonder and surprise...

So if your out there girl...
where ever you are...
Remember...
for every sunset,
there's a sunrise.
