Do Children Learn Better with Music and Songs

Category UnCategories

Children, no matter what age, learn well from songs. It helps them to remember a concept better. This is true with very young children, all the way up until high school and even college. I currently teach Kindergarten and there is a lot of singing at this age and the Pre - Kindergarten level, probably more so than any other age. It seems like as the children get older, there is less singing in the classroom. This should not be because songs are fun and children love to sing.

I was doing a Math activity a few weeks ago with my class. The concept was before and after, so I had my kids line up in the front of the room. I asked certain children who was in front and in back of them. I realized that they did not seem to know their classmates' names. That was the real reason why they were not answering me. It took me a few minutes to figure that out. In the mornings, during circle time, we sing a song to the tune of Farmer in the Dell:

Jane is here today,
Jane is here today,
Let's all clap together because Jane is here today.

At first, we were just singing everyone's name but other students in the class had no idea who Jane or Bill was. So, I had them stand up while singing the song, then sit down when their name was called. This way the other students can see who Jane and Bob are. In a matter of just a few days, everyone knew everyone else's name. Singing a song was the best way to learn everyone's name. The children love to hear their name called and they love to sing.

During circle time we also do the days of the week. Since children remember better with songs, I sing this one to the tune of the Adams' Family:

There's Sunday and there's Monday,
There's Tuesday and there's Wednesday,
There's Thursday and there's Friday,
And then there's Saturday.

Days of the week (clap twice)
Days of the week (clap twice)
Days of the week
Days of the week
Days of the week (clap twice)

We also sing a song for the months of the year to the tune of One Little Two Little Three Little Indians.

I remember learning the 50 states song when I was in 4th grade. If it was not for this song, I do not think that I would be able to name all 50 states in alphabetical order today. I still remember the tune and the states. There is no way that I would have learned them just by memorizing them on paper.

As you can see, songs and singing go very much hand in hand with teaching. You don't have to be a great singer or know a lot of songs. The Internet is full of songs and tunes for any occasion. All you have to do is search.
